Mosaic Tiles: Sheets of Small Tiles
OK, small tiles require more grout and like-for-like sometimes cost a little more than an equivalent area tiled with large tiles. Mosaic sheets are also a breeze to use where electrical sockets have to be installed; make corners easier to tile and are simple to adjust around difficult shapes and curved surfaces when large tiles would be a nightmare to cut precisely or create a lot of waste
Did I mention mosaic tiling looks great for borders and features; especially when mixed with larger matching tiles in bathrooms and kitchens
Marble or stone mosaics became popular thanks to the decorative picture mosaics dating back to Roman times where the Italian nobility would decorate their homes, palaces and bath houses with pictures composed of small tiles and create fancy borders made with matching small tessellated pieces of the same quarry stone
Tiling with Stone and Marble for a Neutral Backdrop
I would say that marble has always been one of the most popular tiling materials for Grand designs and architectural elegance, however, its close cousins: travertine and limestone are also becoming the specifier’s dream as they’re regularly used for bathroom refurbishments in buy-to-rent or refurbish-to-sell properties where a neutral backdrop capable of taking on the tastes of the new occupant with a few personal accessories or change of curtains and blinds becomes a big plus
The other great benefit of using many of the neutral marble stone colours is that they are timeless and therefore unlikely to go out of fashion the way certain colours or styles tend to. By changing fittings or other decorative elements; marble wall and floor finishes can remain in place to save time and money while ageing gracefully like a true design classic
How to Choose Mosaic Tiles
Start with the end in mind and work back from the room you’re planning to tile; bathrooms and kitchens can stand alone while connecting rooms like passages and hallways often need to work with the general look of the building or property to help create a unified whole
Next decide whether you want to use sheets of mosaics and form a border to enhance a different tile or if the mosaics will form the main tiled area; tile thickness is important when mixing mosaic with standard tiles because combining thick stone mosaics with some of the very thin ceramic tiles may cause problems getting a flush finish or require excessive amounts of tile adhesive to adjust the surface level
Check out the different adhesives and grouts to ensure you get a finish capable of lasting many years while withstanding staining or mould growth in wet rooms, bathrooms and kitchens. There are more colours than the usual white grout so it’s possible to find a material that colour matches closely or forms a dramatic contrast for added interest
Order extra mosaic tiles for decorating furniture such as table tops, recessed cabinet doors, drawers or even creating co-ordinated table mats and coasters for kitchen-diners or open plan kitchen and dining areas. This may be a way to revamp old furniture while creating a designer look or aged and distressed finish that still suits your decor and marries up furnishings that may not normally work together
